Search apps
⌃⌘S opens a search palette over whatever you're doing. Results appear from the first letter — every matching app in your Applications folders, in a dock or not. Return opens it. That's the whole gesture.
Names that start with your letters rank first, then word starts, then the rest — so the app you meant is almost always the first row, one Return away.
The palette is also how apps get into your docks now. Hover a result and press the +, or hit ⌘↩ — with one dock it pins straight in; with several, your docks appear by name and one click pins. ⌘1–⌘9 pin straight to that dock, no menu at all (⌘0 for the tenth).
Rows already pinned somewhere say so — a quiet pin mark, and the menu shows exactly which docks hold it.
The palette searches your Applications folders — system apps and your own — not just what you've pinned. The tool you use twice a year is as reachable as the one you live in, and neither needs a dock slot to earn it.
Esc behaves like it should: a filled field clears first, an empty one closes. No surprises under your fingers.
The chord works everywhere, the menu bar icon carries it too, and docksmith://search/toggle opens the palette from Raycast, BetterTouchTool or a Shortcut — your muscle memory picks the door.
