Open a file

Your files.
And the right app for each.

⌃⌘O opens a palette over your working folders — Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and every folder pinned to a dock. Step in with Return, type to search, and when you open a file, YOU pick the app: the usual one on Return, or another that can open it on ⌘Return.

Open a file O

A JPEG can open in the viewer or in your editor; a Markdown file in your notes app or your IDE. The picker lists the top apps that can open the file, the default first and checked — ⌘1–⌘9 choose without the menu.

Search a few levels deep

Type from anywhere in the palette and it searches the folder you're in and a few levels below it — your letters rank first, the freshest file wins the ties — each hit labelled with the folder it lives in. The invoice is three folders down; your fingers don't need to know that.

It's deliberately your working folders, not the whole disk — Spotlight indexes everything; this finds the file you touched this week, faster than you can reach the Finder.

Folders are first-class too

Return steps into a folder, on an empty field (or ) steps back out. And on a folder pins it to a dock — where it becomes a live folder tile, thumbnails and all. The folders you pin become roots of the palette in turn.

Scripts get a door too: docksmith://files/toggle opens the palette from Shortcuts or Raycast.

Private, and polite about it

The first time the palette reads a protected folder, macOS itself asks you — once, per folder, the system's own dialog. Say no and the palette says so honestly instead of pretending the folder is empty.

Nothing is indexed to disk, nothing leaves your Mac. Close the palette and it forgets what it saw.
